چکیده

In computational linguistics there is growing insight that high-quality NLP applications for information access (question anwering, etc.) are in need of deeper linguistic analysis, in particular, semantic analysis. A bottleneck for semantic processing is the lack of large-scale domain-independent lexical semantic resources. While WordNets for several languages are important lexical resources for paratactic semantic relations, we are lacking large-scale lexical resources for the semantic description of relational lexical items, in particular predicate-argument structure. There are now efforts for the creation of large lexical semantic resources that provide information on predicateargument structure. The Berkeley FrameNet project [2], building on Fillmore’s theory of frame semantics [5], has a strong lexicographic character, concentrating on the definition of an inventory of frames and their semantic roles, and manual annotation of selected example sentences. A strictly corpus-based approach is carried out at the UPenn, with the creation of “PropBank” [8] – a manual predicate-argument annotation on top of the PennTreebank. Similar to corpus-based induction of stochastic grammars from syntactically annotated corpora, there are first approaches for learning models for semantic role assignment from semantically annotated corpora (e.g. [7]). However, since semantic role assignment is based on a syntactic annotation layer, fully automatic processing for semantic role assignment requires an interface between a syntactic analyser and the targeted semantic representation. In [1] we presented a design study for an LFG syntax-semantics projection architecture for frame semantics. In this paper we report on the corpus-based induction of an operational computational LFG interface for frame semantic annotation. We describe the methods we apply in order to derive generic frame assignment rules from annotation instances of a manually annotated corpus (see example in Fig. 1(a)). We further present first experiments to assess the potential of frame semantic processing for semantics-driven syntactic disambiguation.

Corpus-Based Induction Of An LFG Syntax-Semantics Interface For Frame Semantic Processing

We present a method for corpus-based induction of an LFG syntax-semantics interface for frame semantic processing in a computational LFG parsing architecture. We show how to model frame semantic annotations in an LFG projection architecture, including special phenomena that involve non-isomorphic mappings between levels. Frame semantic annotations are ported from a manually annotated corpus to ...

Application of Frame Semantics to Teaching Seeing and Hearing Vocabulary to Iranian EFL Learners

A term in one language rarely has an absolute synonymous meaning in the same language; besides, it rarely has an equivalent meaning in an L2. English synonyms of seeing and hearing are particularly grammatically and semantically different. Frame semantics is a good tool for discovering differences between synonymous words in L2 and differences between supposed L1 and L2 equivalents. Vocabulary ...

Cross-Lingual Projection of LFG F-Structures: Building an F-Structure Bank for Polish

Various methods aim at overcoming the shortage of NLP resources, especially for resource-poor languages. We present a cross-lingual projection account that aims at inducing an annotated treebank to be used for parser induction for Polish. Our approach builds on Hwa et al.’s projection method [7] that we adapt to the LFG framework. The goal of the experiment is the induction of an LFG f-structur...

Parallel Lfg Grammars on Parallel Corpora: a Base for Practical Triangulation

This paper presents an approach to annotation projection in a multi-parallel corpus, that is, a collection of translated texts in more than two languages. Existing analysis tools, like the LFG grammars from the ParGram project, are applied to two of the languages in the corpus and the resulting annotation is projected to a third language, taking advantage of the largely parallel character of f-...

A Projection Architecture for Dependency Grammar and How it Compares to LFG

This paper explores commonalities and differences between Dachs, a variant of Dependency Grammar, and Lexical-Functional Grammar. Dachs is based on traditional linguistic insights, but on modern mathematical tools, aiming to integrate different knowledge systems (from syntax and semantics) via their coupling to an abstract syntactic primitive, the dependency relation. These knowledge systems co...
